Practical Exercise Tips

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Today I was cleaning up my backyard that was once a jungle, literally.  My sister dropped off her one year old daughter, Ruby so I could watch her for the day.  I knew that I needed to be organized as I had a long list to accomplish while also wanting to spend some quality time in the fresh air with my niece.  I find that there is nothing more satisfying at the end of the day than seeing progress around the home and feeling all my muscles exhausted from a good days work.    I wanted to share with you some simple and practical tips for exercise that will allow you to benefit from exercise while accomplishing tasks around the home.

  • Gardening is an excellent way to get exercise as you need the strength of your upper and lower body.  When raking and digging in the dirt you can burn up to seven calories per minute
  • If you have small children, put them in a child backpack and do your yardwork.  The extra weight will tone your arms and legs as you as you support the backpack and as you are going from squating to standing
  • Take a walk to run errands.  If you have young children this is often a great way to help them relax and allows them to observe nature
  • If you have stairs in your home, use them for cardio work and leg and buttock toning
  • Ride your bike or walk to activities or errands that are near by rather than jumping in the car

By taking these extra steps to stay happy and healthy, you will benefit by decreasing your risk of disease, improve your sleep, digestion and mood and will reduce your carbon footprint.  Small intentional steps to improve your health and the health of the planet over time can lead to great change.  You are also setting a great example for the people around you.  Enjoy the journey!
